Improving Energy Efficiency and Operation of Traditional Timber Sash Windows in a B-Listed Baronial Residence | West Pollokshields, Glasgow
Located in the prestigious “Avenues” area of West Pollokshields, this impressive B-Listed Scots Baronial sandstone residence, designed by architect W. F. MacGibbon and built circa 1886, is rich in period detail and historic character. The homeowners were keen to maintain the building’s original appearance while improving comfort, energy efficiency and the day-to-day usability of their traditional sash and case windows.
Internally, the property features exceptional period detailing, including original stained and leaded glass, ornate plasterwork and timber finishes, all of which required sensitive handling throughout the project.
Restoring Function and Improving Energy Efficiency
The existing sash windows remained visually beautiful but were no longer functioning properly — difficult to open during warmer weather and increasingly draughty, noisy and inefficient throughout the winter months.
MWM Matt Window Mate carried out a full restoration and operational upgrade, including complex refurbishment of the original timber window boxes and sashes, repairs to windowsills, fitting new sash cords, and installing a professional draught-proofing system designed to eliminate rattles and significantly reduce heat loss.
These upgrades improved energy efficiency and day-to-day usability while preserving the window’s original appearance. To complete the work, the windows were re-pointed, decorated and finished to a high standard fully in keeping with the historic character of the home.
To support ongoing comfort and energy performance, this restoration now enables smoother opening, reduced draughts, quieter interiors and significantly improved heat retention — all without altering the historic character of the windows or façade.
